Dining In Alexandria
It is possible to eat anything from sukiyaki to Kentucky Fried Chicken. Don't fall into the trap of eating only in tourist restaurants or thinking that Egyptian food doesn't rise beyond kofta (minced lamb) and kebabs. You can satisfy most tastes if you know where to look. The options range from Arab cafés offering a few simple dishes to extravagant "food weeks" at deluxe hotels. Foreigners are generally pleasantly surprised by the cost of eating out in Alexandria. The cheapest option is kushari, a mixture of noodles, lentils and rice, topped with fried onions and a spicy tomato sauce, and other low-priced dishes include fuul (fava bean stew) and taamiya ( Egyptian falafel - fried balls of bean paste). Kofta and kebab are often sold by the quarter kilo, accompanied by pita bread and tahina (sesame paste) sauce. Other specialties include mahshi (stuffed vegetables), and shawarma (vertical lamb kebab).

Moral Codes: Egypt is a Middle Eastern country and has Middle Eastern customs. It is known as Um id-dunya(the mother of the world).Egypt (Misr) is a safe country. You can move from any place to another any time, walk in any the street any time. Egyptians have been raised in a social environment steeped in Islam, a background that can colour their decision-making in a way difficult for foreigners to understand. Living expenses are very cheap, compared to European or North American countries. You can have a good living standard with less than $500 US/month!Some married students prefer to give birth in Alexandria, as it costs them only about $250 US in a good Alexandrian hospital. Egyptians are some of the most charming and helpful of hosts. By understanding the culture and with consideration for your hosts, you can be a welcome guest in Egypt. In Egypt there are hardly any restrictions on foreign women. Ticket lines are occasionally segregated. Women should line up with other women (especially since the lines are usually shorter). On buses, the driver may want you to be seated in the front with other women. On the metro lines, the first car is usually reserved for women. In Egypt, a woman traveling alone is generally safe, but she will be noticed, less in large cities than in the country. However, if problems do occur, seek help from the police or any shop nearby. Although you probably will never be accosted, take simple precautions as you would anywhere: don't walk in deserted areas alone. Although most invitations are innocent, don't accept them from strangers. For men, speaking to an unknown Egyptian woman is a breach of etiquette. Take care in any liaisons you form because some families still follow conservative traditions.
What to Wear Egypt is a conservative country and visitors should respect this attitude. It is advisable to wear cotton in summer as the heat can be like a furnace. In winter wear layers that can be taken off during the heat of the day and put back on for cool evenings. Wear loose and flowing garments, which are not only modest, but practical in a hot climate. Bring comfortable shoes. Women will be more accepted when touring old churches and mosques if they are wearing some sort of head covering.
Diving and snorkeling In recent years, SCUBA diving has become an increasingly popular activity. The Red Sea coral reefs are considered by many experts to be one of the natural wonders of the world, rivaling the Great Barrier Reef. Don't take anything with you as you leave, and leave nothing behind. Under the water: behave like an eco-tourist and help to conserve our precious nature.
Visiting Mosques Major tourism mosques are open to the public unless services are in progress (the main service is on Friday at noon). Other mosques are not. All visitors to mosques must remove their shoes. Most Muslims walk around in their stockings but those mosques that are major tourist attractions have canvas overshoes available; a tip is in order for the people who put them on for you. Women must cover bare arms and should cover their head.
Photography in Egypt With regard to taking photos in Egypt the main difficulty is that you are spoiled for choice when it comes to things to shoot. You will find that at museums & tombs there is an additional fee for photography; about EGP 5 to EGP 10 for museums (but not the KarnakOpenAirMuseum) and EGP 5 per tomb. Although this is sometimes reported as being just a means of ripping off tourists the actual amounts involved are insignificant and do help in a big way to fund the activities of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. Perhaps one of the best things about any trip to Egypt is the fact that it is quite possible, enjoyable and perfectly safe to just go off for a wander along the streets and amidst the Egyptian people, secure in the knowledge that there is sure to be something new and interesting around every corner.
Egypt is located in the heart of the Arab World, so if you wish to make Hajj or Umrah, you can easily reach Saudi Arabia in only an hour. You also can visit Jordan and see its old civilizations, or Syria, Lebanon, or Palestine also within an hour.
